2025 was an odd one. I spent some time with Elite: Dangerous, and have dove back into FFXI again after another short stint in FFXIV. It does not serve as an adequate replacement to me, at least not for all aspects of why I like XI.
I started the year out strong with tabletop gaming, but then fell off drastically in the second half, after the third edition of Horus Heresy came out, which is odd considering it is my favorite game and also the one I worked the most on hobby-wise this year. Both Age of Darkness and Legions Imperialis and Adeptus Titanicus scales.
I still need to upgrade my gaming PC, but the recent announcement of Steam Machines has me really intrigued. I wonder whether I should buy one of those instead, and make a foray into using Linux as well.
On the tabletop side, I've mostly cut out buying new model kits in the latter part of the year, being preoccupied with FFXI but also a bit burnt out on hobby. I still have a huge amount of stuff on the shelf unpainted, though. I don't have any immediate hobby plans, since I am in a place where I have about everything I need to play Heresy, big or small.
That's about where I am as of the beginning of 2026. I realize updates to this blog have been sporadic. I'd like to be more regular about them. I'll try to remember that going forward. I have no idea where gaming will take me in this new year, but I plan to play a lot more FFXI for the time being, and hopefully to get some Horus Heresy 3rd edition in soon. I'll need to set up a table at home to learn the game, probably in the next week or two.

That last one I technically finished on Jan 2nd 2026, but I'm counting it as a 2025 read. I've read a decent bit of The History of Japan to 1334 and Trade Wars are Class Wars in the last couple of months, as well. I still need to get better about reading nonfiction. There are tons of books in that category I'd like to read.

The Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness has just had it's third edition rules release. I got together with the local Heresy aficionado crew this past weekend to celebrate the sendoff of the second edition with a three-round Rogue Trader Tournament, RTT in the parlance. These are casual events, especially in this game system and with this crowd, who are all in it to make cool armies and bash them together on the neoprene field of battle.
Right now, just about all of my hobby energy is going toward Heresy (aka 30K). I am doing some long-awaited revamping of my White Scars army to feature era-appropriate armor on the infantry as they will probably be my main focus for this edition, at least in the foreseeable future. I ended up spending nearly all of second edition building and playing my Alpha Legion, and for the most part they are in a good place now to be back-burnered in favor of my first love.
More updates on hobby progress to come.

I backed into this color scheme a while ago when I decided to paint up a second Titan Legio. My first was Legio Ignatum "Fire Wasps", one of the Triad Ferrum Morghulis, the three principal Titan Legios of Mars. Legio Tempstus "Stormlords" and Legio Mortis "Death's Heads". I wanted a second force of Titans to play against my first, one that would have probably been on the Traitor side of the Heresy. The Stormlords fit the bill. I overshot their bluish color, though, and ended up with more of a burgundy in the end. I like the scheme, though, and it's relatively fast and easy to replicate, so I'm sticking with it. I was able to build and paint the Reaver here to what I deem an acceptable standard in just about a week, so that is a win in my book.
It'll slot in to both my planned lists for Legions Imperialis and Adptus Titanicus for Adepticon this year.
Elsewise, I'm working on painting some Stormcast Eternals now for Age of Sigmar. I'll have pics later, but the scheme is very bright red with black and yellow, drawing on some very old Blood Angels colors, and I've named the Stormhost The Burnin' Fahrr, after my mis-hearing and misunderstanding of my grandfather's place of employment when I was a child.

With those Kratos painted, I now have a solid 2,000 point Alpha Legion list for Legions Imperialis that I could run at Adepticon this year. This may be the last I paint in AL colors for either Epic or 28mm scale, since I have pretty much what I need on that side, as well. For further Epic scale Astartes I am planning one formation of White Scars, and another of perhaps Iron Warriors or another legion. I am finding playing the game, tracking formations can be difficult when everything is painted the same colors.
So, next up, a second Reaver Titan for my Legio Ignatum force for Adeptus Titanicus!
Somewhere along the line this switched over to being a hobby blog for miniatures games. I do still play video games, also. At least sometimes.
2024 was a pretty light year on that front, but I did have a torrid affair with Fallout: New Vegas, completing two full playthroughs in a row, first siding with Mr House, and then with Caesar. That leaves only the NCR playthrough left, but I was not up for a third consecutive at the time.
I also decided to pick up FFXIV once more, and spent a good month on that before being distracted. I do plan to go back, and I'm keeping my subscription live.
What side-tracked me was wanting to play through Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic again in order to play along the podcast A More Civilized Age. I had a really good time doing so, and completed a full playthrough as a Dark Lord of the Sith. I had no idea I would be forced to kill so many of my own companions in doing so! I'm really looking forward to eventually playing KOTOR II now, as well. That's one that I never got to, previously.
Elsewhere I dabbled a little in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Total War: Warhammer, Diablo IV (didn't grab me), Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear (need to get back to this), Skyrim (as per usual), Fallout 4, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Dark Souls II, and Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector. I think I basically opened Crusder Kings III and Elite: Dangerous this year and bailed before doing anything. Even less impressively, I bought Shin Megami Tensei V in Japan this year and never booted it up. I did play a little Warhammer 40:000 Mechanicus there, though. Seems OK.
I don't have a GOTY pick for 2024. I'm not sure I even played anything new this year. It's been busy, otherwise. As of this writing early in 2025 I am installing Red Dead Redemption 2 to give that a shot. I've also felt a little bit of a tug back toward Assassin's Creed Origins lately, too. We'll see if anything comes of those. I do still need to play my fair share of FF XIV, after all. They've recently added some FFXI content to it's endgame that I want to experience. I love FFXI, but I'm not ready to go back to it yet. I need to familiarize myself with it's younger sibling that may one day inherit.
Well, the end of the year snuck up on me. So I guess here is the final list of titles read for 2024. Over the winter break I began and continued a few others, but didn't finish anything further.
I'm not sure I care to pick a book of the year, but I'll go ahead and call it The End and the Death Volume III, the capstone of the Horus Heresy series. It was definitely momentous. For a runner-up, I'll say Hand of Abaddon by Nick Kyme, which was a lot of fun, also. Special shout out to John Gray's The New Leviathans, one of the few dalliances into non-fiction I've taken lately, aside from articles online.

Above is my latest hobby project finished. As written, I had been considering playing a Questoris Familia style list, all or primarily Knights, at Adepticon this year, but the event organizers have put out their rules packet and forbidden that army type.
So, I will tentatively take my Alpha Legion force in Epic scale, instead. I have enough painted that I can run three full formations and be very near the 2000 point army limit. It'll just require the addition of 4 Kratos Heavy Battle Tanks, which may be the next thing I build and paint.
In addition to Legions Imperialis, I plan to play in the Adeptus Titanicus doubles event with my friend Dave. He and I also partnered up for the same event in 2023. To make my tentative 1250 point list, a Ferrox Light Maniple of Titans, I'll need to build and paint one more Reaver Battle Titan.
Fortunately, I have both the Reaver and the Kratos tanks on my shelf ready to be started. So, that's what I have decided to work on next, hobby-wise. These are both good projects in that they will be toward a clear goal and from my pile of potential, reducing it by a few models.
Unfortunately, I had laid out cash for a couple more Knights model kits before I saw the list restriction, so I'll be adding those to the shelf without a clear mandate for the models. I guess if I organize my own event and plan my own games, I can run whatever I like, though.

I've finished my recent work on my Alpha Legion in 28mm scale, for the Horus Heresy tournament at the beginning of December. I had forgotten to post the second Leviathan Heavy Siege Dreadnought until a later date, however.
Since then, thinking about what I need to get painted for the next big thing, it's all come down to more models for Legions Imperialis. The Storm Eagles I posted previously are a part of that effort. I need them, specifically, to fill out an Aerial Assault Formation for my Alpha Legion in Epic scale, which I think is roughly 8mm, rounded up. Games Workshop says it's 1/4 scale of Age of Darkness, which is commonly referred to as 28mm scale, but is actually a little more "heroic" than that, in how certain features of models are exaggerated for aesthetics. Regardless, I have Alpha Legion forces in both scales.
I also have Solar Auxilia in Epic scale, and the infantry bases shown here are the last of those I had unpainted around the house. I'm not sure I'll use them much except for games around the house for practice or potentially to demo the game at my local store, but I had the army from buying the initial launch box of the game, and I'd bought an additional kit of them, as well. Those are all painted, now. All that remains are my 10 aircraft for the faction. Those should be fairly quick to paint at some point, though.
For now I am painting 3 Questoris Knights, again at Epic scale. In my first game to learn the system I had fun moving my Acastus Knight Porphyrion around shooting stuff. I think this scale might be the best way to play with Knights and Titans (I'm sure it is for Titans, albeit using Adeptus Titanicus rules).
I suppose it would be good to prep some of those Auxilia aircraft soon, also, especially to run in practice and learning games head of Adepticon, where I plan to play in a Legions Imperialis event. I do also need to brush up on my Adeptus Titanicus play, since I plan to play that there, as well.
I have a tournament report somewhere already written that I hope to dig out and include here...Ordo Fanaticus December to Dismember ‘24, Portland OR. I'm planning on playing Legions Imperialis at Adepticon 2025, and I may well want to run an air wing, so I found it was necessary to add at least these two transports to my Alpha Legion. I still have to really sit down and plan my list for the event, but I have a few months' time to do so. With these additions to the Legions Imperialis force, I can field a full 2000 point list of Alpha Legion with one Titan for support. I am also given to understand that Rhinos can be pretty useful even when empty of their cargo.
I've painted a bunch of Lil' Legions to this point, but still have yet to play a game, though I have done a good amount of list building. With luck I'll be able to attend Adepticon in 2025 and get some games in there, if not before.

I was heading up to the store to try to get a quick game in and I'd heard Armies on Parade was happening, so I just picked up the Praetorians here as they were my most recent project and I wanted to make sure the store had plenty on display. I had no idea I'd even be in contention for a prize. There was at least one other entry there I thought more impressive, but I'll not argue with the judging.

Since my last post, I have painted a squad of Sternguard Veterans, above, for the new chapter. I also have some Hellblasters built and primed black, along with a Ballistus dreadnought, which I have tentatively selected to be painted next in this scheme.
I then moved swiftly along to continue work on my Ironjawz warband for Age of Sigmar, which I have dubbed Krumpford and Sunz.
With the Ironjawz I have found myself batch painting an entire force of nearly 1,500 points, which I would not normally choose to do, but I keep electing to take the next most impactful step as far as painting, and then applying it across the entire army, which as of now consists of:
Megaboss
Warchanter
Weirdboy Shaman
Ardboy Big Boss
10x Ardboyz
5x Brutes
3x Morgok's Krushas (run as Brute Ragerz)
3x Gore-gruntas
Maw-grunta with Hakkin' Krew
As well as a Megaboss on Maw-krusha which is still new in box. Adding that would put me very near to 2,000 points as the models are currently valued.
It's easiest for me to get in games of Age of Sigmar these days, so I figured I should get the force I'll be using to a basic battle ready standard, and over the last week I have gotten closer to that goal, now having made good strides toward having a "getting there" looking army.
I'm only really liable to be playing 1,000 point games in the near future with it, so I don't know when the Maw-krusha might ever come out.
Once I get some models to a more-or-less finished state, I'll post some pictures.
I created a Space Marine chapter this week, Radix Praetorians. They want the Imperium to RETVRN to the times before the Imperial Creed dominated every aspect of life. Chapter Designation: Radix Praetorians
Primogenitor Legion: Dark Angels
Founding: Ultima Founding
Astartes Generation: Primaris-exclusive
Home World: Caladax
Chapter Livery: Black armor, gold pauldrons, green accents
The Radix Praetorians, or the Order of the Renaissance, or sometimes just the Renaissance, see themselves as the guardians of the Emperor's original vision for an enlightened, secular Imperium of Mankind. They would like to see the Imperial Creed recede in power and prominence across the galaxy, in favor of a more rational and pragmatic philosophy to create another golden age for the Imperium.
They are not fundamentalist subscribers to the Imperial Truth, acknowledging the presence and threat that Chaos poses, but nor do they appreciate the rise of the Imperial Creed and its adherents, including but not limited to the Black Templars, Adepta Sororitas, and the Adeptus Ministorum.
The Radix Praetorians are equally enthusiastic to purge the Xenos and Warp-tainted, though they may not throw their full support behind shrine worlds and the like, in favor of any other choices. Neither do they go out of their way to defend forge worlds, whom they reason can take care of themselves, though they do acknowledge the Adeptus Mechanicus's place in the Imperium as providers of wargear, and honor Archmagos Cawl's efforts through which they themselves were constituted.
The eastern fringe world of Caladax, a place of mostly temperate forests and mountains, was given to the Chapter as a place to set up a fortress monastery and to recruit from. The population are hardy folk with a long lived and vibrant culture that is largely agrarian, no-nonsense, and close to the earth. Observation of ecological trends and weather over millennia concerned the people more with explaining and coping with natural phenomena themselves than beseeching a higher power to do it for them. An equally well-heeled tradition for meritocratic government and cooperation has made citizens of Caladax wise, as well, resulting in a population that turns out a good number of chapter aspirants like-minded to the Praetorians' guiding philosophy.
With it's close proximity both to the Cicatrix Maledictum and the T'au Empire, chapter garrison engagements with forces from either are common, as are those with several Necron dynasties and splinters of more than one Tyranid hive fleet. Abroad the galaxy as a whole, the Radix Praetorians can often be found patrolling the borders of the Maelstrom, Eye of Terror, and Great Rift. Some excursions through the Nachmund Gauntlet have seen chapter fleets delve into Imperium Nihilus, though the status of those forces is unconfirmed.
The Radix Praetorians are not especially close to other chapters descended from the Dark Angels, lacking many of the martial traditions that brotherhood holds, but rumors suggest they have good reason to be combing the half of the galaxy blind to the Emperor's light along with the chapters of the Unforgiven. There is something or someone out there making an effort to hold it all together, and that suggests it is possible to separate the continued existence of the Imperium from the benighted institutions on their side of the rift.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to work on, hobby-wise, after coming home from a few weeks abroad. I have decided for now to finish off enough models on my shelf so that I'll have the complete roster of one of the two Space Marines' 10th Edition Combat Patrol lists done up. That meant one Librarian in Phobos Armour, and 5 Infiltrators, to bring me up to a total of 10. The other stuff in the list I already had done from some time ago.
I've finished the Librarian, as you can see above, but I've yet to begin work on the Infiltrators, which are built and primed white at the moment.

The Bluesky posts there basically say it all, but I am very proud of the showing my Headhunter Leviathal pulled out at the second of these events I brought it to. The first was a bit of a bust because I had to leave after only one game in which we only really played a couple of rounds, and thus didn't get the chance to really prove the list.
In a nutshell, it's designed to kill the enemy's Warlord, the model at the head of their army, for extra victory points to add to the game end tally. Most of those will come from smart primary objective play, but the points of Slay the Warlord are enough to put me over the top in the event of a draw or near draw.
It's also just a real Alpha move, a real PsyOp, and entirely thematically consistent with the lore of my army, the Alpha Legion, who thrive on sneaky, underhanded mind games they use to supplement their already prodigious capabilities as a straight up Space Marine Legion.
