Talons of the Emperor vs Deathwatch 01/06/23

I got in another game with my Talons of the Emperor force, their second time out, versus Deathwatch this time.

This is a player I've played against a time or two before, and the same army as he had once when I had my White Scars, though he brought different units this time.

For my part, I had just added a newly painted Blade Champion to the list:

Blade Champion
Aleya
Custodian Guard with Spears x3
''
Prosecutors x5
Allarus Terminators x3
Venerable Contemtor Dreadnought
Vigilators x5
Witchseekers x5

This all came to 1000 points on the nose.

My opponent had roughly:

Primaris Lieutenant in Reiver Armour
Deathwatch veterans x5 --missile launchers
Deathwatch veterans x5 --plasma guns
Invictor Warsuit
Gladiator Lancer
Land Raider Redeemer

I completely forgot to take any pictures for the first turn or two, but my opponent went first, and drove his Land Raider up to my lines and promptly roasted several of my Sisters of Silence. He also picked off a Custodian Guard or two in that first turn before I could do anything.

In my turn I moved a lot of stuff up toward the offending Land Raider and after firing off some potshots to little effect, charged it and brought it down in combat, forcing the Veterans inside with their missile launchers to hop out. Unfortunately none died in the emergency disembarkation.

On the other side of the battlefield I had a squad of Custodian Guard and the Allarus Terminators moving toward the Gladiator and Invictor, though they got reduced to about half strength on the way.

Eventually I mopped up, mostly in combat, the veterans with the missiles and their Terminator-armored leader, and turned my attentions over to the side of the board with the Gladiator tank and Invictor warsuit.

Along the way, my Contemptor took some shots at the veterans with plasma guns that had deep struck into my deployment zone, but did nothing. More of them died to their plasma guns overcharging and exploading then I killed, in the end, though all did die.

I misunderstood a fight order rule and that may have ended up letting my Blade Champion and Custodian with spear kill his Invictor when that wouldn't have been possible. Oops! Well, to make up for it, I gave him first turn even though I'd won the roll off...

In the end it came down to his Gladiator on a single wound being his only model left. I had my Blade Champion, single Custodian, Aleya, and a single Vigilator remaining, and the edge in Victory Points from playing the objectives all game, as well.

This was a mission generated from the Open War deck where there were three objectives to control and one at random would end up being worth more VP each round. The deployment zones were two triangles that met in the middle of the board from each long edge, and the twist this game was that Aura abilities would only go out to 2" (from 6" in most cases).

What did we learn?

Even Custodes should deploy behind some cover.

Autocannons are hateful to play against with Custodes.

Sisters of Silence die like Guardsmen despite the better armor save.

The 4+ save against mortal wounds from the Emperor's Chosen Shield Host rule is maybe even better than the free reroll it also grants.

Arcane Genetic Alchemy (can't be wounded on anything less than a 4) is well worth the 1 CP to protect your high-investment golden guys.

My Vigilators at least could probably use a Rhino.

Talons of the Emperor vs Deathskullz 12/02/22

This game is really only notable in that it is the first time I have taken my Talons of the Emperor force out to play against another live player. I had a casual list put together for a game at 50PL, which is the standard for play at my local Warhammer store. I had pre-arranged a game with Hassan, a guy I know from the store and who I have played before, only with my White Scars force.

Come to find out, the Warhammer store was closed today, so I messaged Hassan about another venue, a local game store called Rainy Day Games which only recently opened up their play annex. This was my first time playing there, and I would rate the experience very highly. Granted, it was nearly empty on a Friday night, so they were pretty accommodating, even on a non-40K night, allowing us to commandeer a couple of tables and relatively large space and a bunch of their terrain and such.

Chatting with Hassan, we decided to go ahead and play a larger game than I had originally planned for, at about 1500 points. For me this meant only the addition of three more models, albeit high value ones. For Hassan, it meant he could get closer to his actual tournament list. Considering how the game went, maybe we should have stuck at 50 PL!

I got the first turn, and got off to what looked like a decent start, clearing an objective of his Kommandos with my Allarus Terminators.

However, his first turn was a hammer blow to my conical Custodes helmet, as he called the Waaagh and surged across the board with his Orky jet (Wazbom something perhaps) and Deffkoptas loaded out with Rokkits, and his Morkanaut and tons of other hard-hitting stuff.

I had a couple of good moments, getting to use the Tanglefoot Grenade stratagem to try and foil a charge of his. He re-rolled it and got a 12 anyway. He charged my Witchseeker squad, which was full of flamers, and I got to do a superpowered Overwatch which knocked out a couple of the Deffkoptas.

Otherwise, it was a slaughter.

His Squighog boys annihilated a trio of Custodian Guard, and his Bikers were enough to take care of my Allarus, too. Meanwhile his plane was in my base, his Mek Guns were all still operational, and the Morkanaut had not even been brought down a bracket on it's damage table.

It was getting to be about the time we'd both planned to leave anyway, so we called the game early, even though it was clearly all but over before his second turn. Hassan advised I add some Vertus Praetors to my list, and as much as I am ambivalent about those models, I think he's right that they would help. My preferred additions would be some Sagittarum Guard and Pallas Grav-attacks, but they would also cost twice as much or more in dollar terms, and not being plastic GW models, wouldn't have the rules support (Stratagems, Codex inclusion) the Vertus Praetors do. I picked up a Blade Champion model while there at the shop. I like to buy something every time I play at a place to show support, and I particularly like this place since it's got a wide open, well lit space and also happens to be only about 10-15 minutes drive from my house.

White Scars vs Dawnrush Talons 12/30/20

I set up and played out an Open War game, a simplified ruleset for 40K, to let a friend play out the first battle round in a 62 Power Level (around 1,200 points) game between a selection from my White Scars and my Talons of the Emperor force for Crusade play.

The mission we generated from the Open War deck for 9th edition was simple--kill as much as you can on the opposing side. There were no objectives. We did draw a Blinding Sun twist to the game, but promptly forgot about it once the dice started rolling.

My friend (who chose to play the Talons) had to go home after the first battle round, so I finished out the game on my own. The combined Custodes and Sisters of Silence force, not hampered by having to hold objectives, delivered a sound thrashing to the White Scars, who perhaps unwisely spent a turn focusing fire on a nigh-on invincible Shield-Captain who was not only -1 to hit, but also -1 to wound, had a Toughness of 5, a 2+ armor save that would ignore 1 point of Armor Piercing, a 3+ invulnerable save, a 6+ Feel No Pain rule to shrug off any wounds that did get through, and a bonus wound to his maximum on top of all that. Not one wound got through on said character in several rounds of shooting and combat.

I recorded one point of Requisition earned for either Crusade force, though no agendas or experience points were tracked for the game this time.

White Scars vs Talons of the Emperor 10/24/20

The Mission:

The Talons of the Emperor:
Shield-Captain with Sentinel Blade and Storm Shield
Shield-Captain with Guardian Spear
Custodian Guard x 3
Allarus Custodians x 3
Vexillus Praetor
Venerable Contemptor Dreadnought
Venerable Land Raider
Sisters of Silence Prosecutors x 5

Agendas: Priority Target, Reaper, Survivor (Shield-Captain with Shield)

The White Scars Stormwrath Brotherhood of Hibogen Khan:
Khan on Bike
Lieutenant with Jump Pack
10-man Tactical Squad broken into Combat Squads of 5
5-man Tactical Squad
Terminators x 5
3-man Bike Squad with Attack Bike
Ironclad Dreadnought
Predator Destructor
Rhino

The battlefield. There is a narrowing Search Area centered on the white marker in the middle, with four objective markers scattered around the rest of the field.

The progressive objective scored for controlling the Search Area can be scored in the first battle round, unlike some others, so that incentivizes deploying as many models as possible in the section of it that overlaps with the deployment zone. Further, controlling the Search Area is only dependent on model count within it, and Objective Secured has no meaning for that purpose. Vehicles count as five models.

With that in mind, deployments:

Talons deployment. There were the equivalent of 22 models in the Search Area.

White Scars deployment. They made the equivalent of 24 models in the Search Area.

Talons got 2 CP Crusade Blessings.

White Scars win the roll off, choose to go second.

Round 1.

Talons take first turn.

Miss controlling the search area by two models.

Allarus, Shield Captain with Spear (Spear Cap) advance up one flank.

Land Raider moves up behind them.

Custodian Guard, Vexillus advance through center ruins.

Dreadnought advances around the other flank.

Shield Cap with Storm Shield and Sentinel Blade (Shield Cap), Sisters of Silence Prosecutor Squad hold objectives.

Land Raider shoots Lascannons at Predator. 4 hits, 3 wounds CP reroll into 4 wounds. 3 go to damage. 9 damage done.

Twin Heavy Bolter and Storm Bolter at a Tac Squad in cover. 1 marine dies.

Marines pass morale.

WS turn 1.

Devastator Doctrine in effect.

Control the search area, and so score 15 VP.

Rhino moves up near objective, Tac marines Lightning Debark out.

Terminators move up.

Tac Squad with Heavy Bolter remain stationary.

Ironclad moves up nearer to Allarus and Land Raider.

Lieutenant with Jump Pack advances 18” to give his aura to as many units as possible.

Predator can only move 3”, and does.

Bike Squad and Khan move up near to Custodian Guard.

Here I realize the Custodes have really F’d up because now they’re in 12” of the center of the battlefield and that means no invulnerable saves can be taken. This could get ugly.

Predator Lascannons at the Land Raider. Hitting on 5s, two hits!  Two wounds, on saved. 1 damage, rerolled into 2. meh.

HKM fails to wound.

Autocannon and Storm Bolter at Allarus. Nothing.

Ironclad’s 2 HKM at Land Raider. 5 damage, bringing it down to 9 wounds remaining.

Ironclad’s Heavy Flamer and Melta into Allarus. 1 damage gets through.

Rhino HKM at Land Raider. Miss.

Storm Bolter at Allarus. Nothing.

1st Tac Squad fire at Allarus. Grav Pistol gets through and does 3 damage to finish off one Allarus Custodian.

Terminators shoot 4 Storm Bolters at Allarus. Second one dies, third loses a wound.

Allarus pass morale.

Round 2.

Search Area narrows. Talons to not control it.

Score 10 VP for hold and hold 2.

Custodians all move a little to try and clear the marines off one objective.

Dreadnought rounds the corner to get into the mix.

Shield Cap and Sisters stay on their objectives.

Superior Fire Patterns (double the shots of Rapid Fire weapons) and Blood Games Veterans (unmodified 6s to hit auto-wound) on Custodian Guard Squad.

They shoot at the Tac Squad on the nearby objective. Only one marine dies.

Spear Cap shoots same squad. Nada.

Last Allarus shoots them. One more marine dies.

Land Raider Twin Heavy Bolter and Storm Bolter at the same squad. Wipes them.

Lascannons at Ironclad and Predator. 3 damage only on the Ironclad, wasting another CP reroll. Can’t even wound the Predator!

Dreadnought Muilti-melta at Ironclad. Can’t wound.

Storm Bolter at Terminators. nada.

Spear Cap charges Lieutenant. fail

Allarus charges Lieutenant. success.

Custodian Guard Squad charge Bikers. success.

Dreadnought also. Fails.

Custodian Guard fight bikers with Piercing Strike having them add 1 to wound rolls. So hitting and wounding both on 2s. AP-3. Wipe the whole damn squad. Consolidate into the Khan.

Counter-offensive. Lieutenant fights Allarus. 1 damage through.

Allarus fights Lieutenant. Kills him.

Khan fights Custodian Guard Squad. No wounds.

WS turn 2.

Tactical Doctrine in effect.

Score 15 for controlling the Search Area.

Score 5 for holding an objective.

Khan falls back from Custodians. Feinting Withdrawal so he can still shoot this turn.

Rhino and a Tac Squad reposition slightly.

Predator also.

Rhino Storm Bolter at Allarus. nada.

Tac Squad at Allarus. nada.

Other Tac Squad at Allarus. nada.

Ironclad heavy flamer at Allarus. nope.

Ironclad Melta at Land Allarus. -5 AP says die! Kills the final Allarus.

Predator Lascannons at Land Raider. miss.

Autocannon and Storm Bolter at Custodian Guard Squad. Nothing.

Khan shoots at Custodians. no luck.

Terminators shoot all at Custodians. 1 damage done.

Fierce Rivalries for a 3D6, drop one charge. Terminators at Custodians. Success.

Khan also charges them.

Ironclad too.

Rhino charges Spear Cap and Land Raider.

Terminators fight Custodians. Fury of the First adds 1 to hit rolls. Wipe them out.

Ironclad piles in and consolidates even though Custodians are dead (I think this is legal?)

Rhino fights, misses.

Land Raider and Spear Cap fight Rhino, do 2 damage.

Round 3

Search Area narrows again to 12”

Talons do not control it.

Score 10 for hold, hold 2.

Dreadnought moves up closer to Ironclad and Predator.

Vexillus moves up closer to Ironclad and Khan and Terminators.

Others stay on objectives or in combat.

Land Raider declares shots at Rhino in combat with it, and outside of combat at Tac Squad.

Lame. 4 Lascannons can only deliver 3 damage.

2 Sisters shoot bolters at Ironclad. Can’t wound it.

Dreadnought multi-melta at Ironclad. 10 damage! Reduced by 1 per attack, 8 total. Dead Ironclad. No explosion.

Storm Bolter at Khan. Khan takes 1 damage.

Dreadnought fights Terminators. Only one dies.

Vexillus fights Terminators. 2 damage dealt.

Spear Cap fights, kills Rhino, which explodes. 1 Tac Marines dies. Land Raider takes 1 mortal wound. Spear Cap takes 3 mortal wounds but gets FNP to ignore one.

Spear Cap consolidates onto objective.

Terminators fight Vexillus and Dreadnought.

Vexillus dies. Dreadnought takes 6, FNP ignores 1 damage.

Marines pass morale.

WS turn 3.

Assault Doctrine.

Do not control Search Area.

Score 5 for holding one.

The Eternal Hunt. This stratagem can only be used once per battle, during Assault Doctrine. It says when you have an unmodified wound roll of 6, that attack from a Pistol or Melee weapon gets a further -1 AP in addition to that from Assault Doctrine. So a marine with a chainsword is now hitting at -3 AP, and fists are hitting at -2 AP. Perfect for taking down Custodes!

Khan falls back to very near Land Raider. Terminators fall back.

Predator and both Tac Squads fire all at Land Raider. 7 damage gets through, all from the lascannons.

Terminators charge Dreadnought. Overwatch. nada. Charge goes off. Khan charges Land Raider and Spear Cap. success.

Tac Squad also. success.

Terminators fight Dreadnought. 6 damage gets through to kill it, no explosion.

Khan fights the Land Raider. 5 damage through to kill it.  No explosion.

Spear Cap breaks sequence to fight and kill Khan.

Tac Squad fights next. Bring Spear Cap to 1 wound remaining.

Round 4.

Search Area narrows to 9”

Talons do not control it.

Score 10 for hold, hold 2.

Not much to do but proceed to Fight phase.

Tac Squad fights Spear Cap first. nothing.

Cap fights back. Kills two marines.

Marines pass morale.

WS turn 4.

Score 15 for controlling Search Area.

Score 10 for hold, hold 2.

Tac Squad falls back from Cap.

Ebon Tac Squad advance toward Cap.

Terminators move to get LoS on Cap.

Terminators shoot at Cap. Kill him.

Round 5.

Search Area shrinks to 6”.

Talons can’t score that.

Score 10 for objectives.

Sisters might have a play before its over. They advance to LoS on Tac Squad.  Pop a strat so Boltguns are 18” Assault 3, and fire.

One marine dies.

The other passes Morale.

WS Turn 5.

No one controls Search Area.

Score 5 for holding.

Lone Sgt moves up toward Sisters.

Predator shoots at Sisters. One dies.

Ebon Tac Squad next. Nada.

Terminators. Two Sisters Die.

Lone Sgt shoots Grav-Pistol, kills another.

Sgt charges last Sister. Overwatch. She deals one dmg to him.

Charge success.

Sgt kills the last Sister of Silence in combat.

Game.

WS win, final score 50-40.

The Mission:

Incursion 5 - The Ritual

White Scars

Librarian (Warlord)

10 Tactical Squad

Ironclad Dreadnought

3 Bike Squad with Attack Bike

5 Devastator Squad

Thunderfire Cannon with Techmarine Gunner

Rhino

Adeptus Custodes

Shield-Captain (Warlord)

Shield-Captain

3 Custodian Guard Squad

3 Allarus Custodians

Vexillus Praetor

Venerable Land Raider

Crusade Blessings:

WS 5 Crusade Points

Custodes 4 Crusade Points

Custodes get 1 CP in Crusade Blessings

Until this game I thought the Crusade Blessings were calculated on the Order of Battle, but it's actually only based on the army roster for the game in question, which makes sense.

The Battlefield. The white objective marker indicates the center of the ritual zone, where the defending Warlord can stand and do an action each round for VP. It's 6" in diameter, which zones out the other objectives mostly to the attacker's side of the board, since they have to be 6" away from it, any battlefield edge, and each other.

White Scars attacking

Deployment

Ironclad in Outflank (1 CP)

Devastators in Rhino on board

Custodes defending

Deployment

Shield-Captain, Vexillus, Allarus in Land Raider on board

Librarian moves up, flying to the top of a container to Smite Custodian Guard

Rhino moves over to:

Combat Squad B, who embark, planning to try to make it to the Custodes Warlord next turn

Ironclad does not come in from Outflank—no good spot that doesn’t leave him open for lots of Lascannon shots

Librarian casts Storm-Wreathed on Bike Squad. They can't be overwatched, and can score mortal wounds on the charge.

Smites Custodian Guard Squad. 3 wounds. Custodes get no FNPs. 1 Custodian down.

Bike Squad shoots into Custodian Guard.16 bolter, 1 melta, 3 heavy bolter. 1 wound.

TFC shoots twice using Suppression Fire at same squad.

1st volley, 9 shots. 2 wounds. Custodian fails both saves, rerolls one into a good save.

Tick up to 6 CP

Lone Custodian moves toward Librarian to shorten charge distance.

Custodian shoots Combat Squad A. Doubles shots with Superior Fire Patterns, to 4. No wounds.

Land Raider shoots storm bolter at Combat Squad A. One marine dies. LR shoots the rest at the Bikers.

A biker and the attack bike get blown up. I'm forced to take the attack bike because it's at the end of the formation, and now out of coherency since one in the middle is gone. If I take another from the middle, the distance from Biker Sgt to Attack Bike will be more than 2", so one of them would be lost in the morale phase to coherency checks. Rough! You have to mind your unit formation with mixed units.

Allarus fire grenades at the nearby Rhino and do one wound. Fire their axes into Devastators, killing 2.

Shield Captain fires Spear into Combat Squad A. Nothing.

Allarus Charge Rhino. Need 6, get 11.

Vexilla also. needs 7. Gets 7.

Combat Squad B disembarks, two die in the process.

Allarus, Vexillus, and Shield Captain all consolidate into them.

Land Raider shoots everything at Librarian. Storm Bolter is enough to kill him.

Shield-Captain shoots at Techmarine Gunner (who has a 2+ save wow) does 2 wounds.

Shield Captain charges. Makes it.

Fights. Kills Techmarine, tabling the Scars.

Score 10 end of turn

Round 5

Custodes score another 30

Win 90-30

Post battle, no unit on either side failed their out of action rolls.

For the White Scars, Bike Squad Drover ranked up and got the Battle-Tested battle honour, so they now have objective secured, can shoot without failing an action, and can auto-pass attrition tests while on an objective.

Thunderfire Cannon Conquestmaker ranked up and got the High Calibre weapon enhancement, so it is now shooting at S6!

Devastator Squad Kaminari was marked for greatness.

For the Custodes, the Warlord, Shield-Captain Celal, earned a battle honour by virtue of the win, so I choose Resilient for him, which is a generally applicable 6+ FNP. So now he is -1 to hit, -1 to wound, 2+/3++/6+++, and worth 5 Crusade Points by himself!

Venerable Land Raider Utku gained a rank and the battle honour Repair Systems, which lets it heal one wound each command phase.

Allarus Squad Battal was marked for greatness, and gained a rank and the battle honour Grizzled, given them a generally applicable 6+++ as well. As if they weren't hard enough to kill!

Both armies gained 1 Requisition Point, which will likely be spent to up their respective supply limits.
