I have gotten fairly deep into campaigns and eventually reached a point where I felt stuck, or perhaps lost.</p><p>I'm a fan of Warhammer, mostly on the 40K side, but more and more on the fantasy side as well. As of this writing, Games Workshop has revived the old fantasy setting in the new game Warhammer: The Old World, which is itself a re-invention of the "rank and flank" style game that Warhammer Fantasy Battles was prior to it being retired and the setting being reinvented as Age of Sigmar.</p><p>I've been caught up in the hype around The Old World coming out, but rather than drop $300 or more to buy more plastic models that will sit around for months or years before being painted, and then only rarely played with, I am working through it by taking another charge at Total War: Warhammer. </p><p>At one point or another I bought the first of the three games on Steam, and so I figured I would play it some before eventually moving on to the second and eventually settling into a groove playing the third, which I have already had some experience with. I like to get the full context of things, though, so this is my planned way of going about that.</p><p>I have an army of Ironjawz Orruks (orcs) for playing Age of Sigmar on tabletop, some of which are the same models used in The Old World for Black Orcs. These were that, originally, and then brought forward into AoS as 'ardboyz. Recently, though, 'ardboyz got a new kit, that look different and are armed differently. I bought my models when I did, though, and so I'm left with the old 'ardboyz models which are also the old Black Orcs which are also once again the new Black Orcs, for the new game I don't play yet. But that I might at some point. At any rate, I am playing Orcs and Goblins in Total War: Warhammer, at least in my first campaign.</p><p>I've been enjoying the RTS battles so far, but the best method to manage grand strategy map eludes me. Should I just sit and wait and build up a massive army and go seize the neighboring territories? Or is it better to have multiple smaller forces? How do I keep my populace from being too restive at home, and which settlement upgrades should I pick, and when? Why do my armies have 5-6 different stances they can take on the map? Which of those is best, for what, and when? These are the questions I'm grappling with at the moment. Nevermind actual grand strategy, I just need to get my bearings. </p>Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-13788056812706471562024-01-07T22:28:00.000-08:002024-03-13T23:02:18.363-07:002024 Booklog<p>The Hunt for Vulkan by David Annandale</p><p>The Beast Must Die by Gav Thorpe</p><p>White Dwarf 483</p><p>White Scars: A Codex Space Marines Supplement</p><p>Warhammer: The Horus Heresy - Liber Mechanicum</p><p>The End and the Death Volume III Dan Abnett</p><p>White Dwarf 484</p><p>White Dwarf 485</p><p>The Art of the Horus Heresy</p><p>The New Leviathans by John Gray</p><p>Watchers in Death by David Annandale</p><p>The Last Son of Dorn by David Guymer</p>Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-7837512182134465522023-11-08T22:21:00.000-08:002024-01-01T10:29:32.906-08:00Gaming 2023<p>Final Fantasy XI</p><p>Mario Party Superstars</p><p>Hyper Light Drifter</p><p>Achron</p><p>Desynced</p><p>Burnout Paradise</p><p>Wipeout HD</p><p>Starfield</p><p>Dirt 5</p><p>Castlevania: Lords of Shadow</p><p>Blood Bowl III</p><p>Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader</p><p>Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III</p><p>Fall Guys</p><p><br /></p><p>This was a year dominated by my return to FFXI. I got my first game in against James, who was gracious enough to walk me through the basics, as I had shown up with some models with some paint on them, but not having read much in the way of rules. </p><p>This was the kickoff of the slow-grow AoS league at my local Warhammer store, using some campaign rules that have come out in recent months' White Dwarf issues. It's called Da Great Stomp!!! or perhaps some less Orruk-y equivalent. </p><p>I have long been an admirer from afar of the Ironjawz model range, and I had even bought a few of the kits that were just waiting around to be worked through. I had some nebulout plans for the future, but when I heard about the upcoming campaign which was very Orruk-centric but without any Orruk players, and the games for which I could likely make most weeks, I knew I had to rise to the occasion. So, I quickly chose a 500 point force from what I owned, got that built and primed, and even got some green on the skin of a few of the models.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNWws-W8SSoKPDB3sxOmBI6uSVsz9b5qtOBDCe0o97OTEFj_hpOu4ZRuDTjTRNcrRFmptFhNujJvf4z8_m9atAXRurDCvwHkQVc0lUHqFWUJKgfl86V-q1balsj5LBQk0_9y4zP8Hvi_NlLT70yQrF-TRe4D4pK3Xoyvz0xX5hb1_UvS_4WvXtjstP/s4032/IMG_4807.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNWws-W8SSoKPDB3sxOmBI6uSVsz9b5qtOBDCe0o97OTEFj_hpOu4ZRuDTjTRNcrRFmptFhNujJvf4z8_m9atAXRurDCvwHkQVc0lUHqFWUJKgfl86V-q1balsj5LBQk0_9y4zP8Hvi_NlLT70yQrF-TRe4D4pK3Xoyvz0xX5hb1_UvS_4WvXtjstP/s4032/IMG_4807.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6gt5huH1H8eR993htC1kXcDWaHSFUj7i82-7afjGp170oIgpv4y8zRbhxb7QJdpo4G-Ui0TkkRn89SvJ-a1EG-_Zm9yBNwGsET3Jd1A6UvVnApxWR_W6ucBSbzR0SMC0mm9ZJrVB8Qq2Y08_wMR9nnrvcKxz8gSg3EfMuA_JbWaz8mDJuTh2cTC8P/s4032/IMG_4806.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6gt5huH1H8eR993htC1kXcDWaHSFUj7i82-7afjGp170oIgpv4y8zRbhxb7QJdpo4G-Ui0TkkRn89SvJ-a1EG-_Zm9yBNwGsET3Jd1A6UvVnApxWR_W6ucBSbzR0SMC0mm9ZJrVB8Qq2Y08_wMR9nnrvcKxz8gSg3EfMuA_JbWaz8mDJuTh2cTC8P/w480-h640/IMG_4806.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For the game, since it was the beginning of the campaign, 500 points was the intended size. Unfortunately, it was not to be, and my Ironjawz were wiped out. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div> <img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNWws-W8SSoKPDB3sxOmBI6uSVsz9b5qtOBDCe0o97OTEFj_hpOu4ZRuDTjTRNcrRFmptFhNujJvf4z8_m9atAXRurDCvwHkQVc0lUHqFWUJKgfl86V-q1balsj5LBQk0_9y4zP8Hvi_NlLT70yQrF-TRe4D4pK3Xoyvz0xX5hb1_UvS_4WvXtjstP/w480-h640/IMG_4807.jpeg" width="480" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This was a fun game, though, and I'm looking forward to playing a lot more in the next several weeks.</div><br /><br /><p></p>Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-50538425156831520932023-04-22T13:46:00.021-07:002023-05-17T09:41:49.539-07:00Grey Knights vs Talons of the Emperor 04/21/23<p> I hadn't ever played Grey Knights up at the store before, and I wanted to get in a game there with the current Codex before the advent of 10th edition, as with my previous game with the Astra Militarum.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigJuE3nXxxQCe75neVDK_7DSKSowTlf5sVzge5NGunyg4Yifot_tmCNJ4xIxbbdpH81YhF-YRmiFG-eWerydrjJtD78Vo43Zaf9uO5m6aoYpADA5ZvucdQrmiT4f-qT2R7nsodAESNV5h2S-IzltNXwDjpAzfnC5DH5wW5ET9VKhtNDTd6wVOiK0pR/s4032/35FB58CD-B02E-42FC-8E3D-AC44F953AC63.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigJuE3nXxxQCe75neVDK_7DSKSowTlf5sVzge5NGunyg4Yifot_tmCNJ4xIxbbdpH81YhF-YRmiFG-eWerydrjJtD78Vo43Zaf9uO5m6aoYpADA5ZvucdQrmiT4f-qT2R7nsodAESNV5h2S-IzltNXwDjpAzfnC5DH5wW5ET9VKhtNDTd6wVOiK0pR/w480-h640/35FB58CD-B02E-42FC-8E3D-AC44F953AC63.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I found myself facing Custodes Jonathan, as he goes by on Discord. We played the mission War of Lies on a Dawn of War deployment at 3,000 points.</div><div><br /></div><div>My opponent was proxying some 40K models, but from what I recall his list was like this:</div><div><br /></div><div>Geigor Fell-hand</div><div>Hvarl Red Blade</div><div>Varagyr Terminators x10</div><div>Grey Hunters/Stalkers (not sure which) x10</div><div>Another unit of the above</div><div>Contemptor Dreadnought</div><div>Leviathan Dreadnought</div><div>2 Land Raider Spartans</div><div>Sicaran Battle Tank</div><div><br /><img alt="" id="id_efce_f089_2372_7157" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/LrMg49u2I8_ZI9tWsecxgnUDqwlCAKywA_1UddQCmwaiG3IzdNslpktYFOqEwlbBFrs" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>He won the roll off to choose to deploy first and go first (unles the other player can Sieze the Initiative), but let me have the first turn. I infiltrated my Headhunter Kill Team, but not very far up. I knew he would be coming my way, and I wanted to keep some range to let them hopefully do their thing and take out a character.</div><div><br /></div><div>In the first turn, I destroyed his Sicaran with my Spartan, and killed a few of his Troops with my own Sicarans. I think I shot at his Leviathan but didn't ping off any wounds with the Kratos. I got confused regarding my Kratos about whether I had paid the points for Flashburn shells (I had), so I didn't use those, and so the Kratos was weaker against the Leviathan and Spartans on the other side than I would have liked. From now on I'll remember that yes I definitely have paid for the Flashburn shells every time I field the Kratos tank. <br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_f405_975f_c27a_4bfd" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/kK6KvzKPQVsk8nlTk8Cfq6-x5bEWfWdcyJJPXHJafLSHSUoCnjGhBuNTTCb9d4LURtI" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Later on, I went to fire at his Spartan with mine and mine was immobilized by a Return Fire reaction. It slipped my mind that this reaction was not actually possible (only defensive weapons can be used when a vehicle reacts), but we made good on it later on when he gave me a freebie reaction with my Spartan under similar circumstances. He even let me target something out of my firing arcs.</div><div><br /></div><div>The play of the game has to go to his use of his Advanced Reaction. When I moved up a squad of Veterans to make use of the 9" Rapid Fire range of their Banestrike bolters, he reacted allowing a unit to first make an Initiative move toward me then a charge, in my Movement phase! <br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_e05d_e5cf_bb66_b05a" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/zfkSrqy4UoH-xW7zSkOudp8-FudfBboNCokF4bjv8euXZBy-mZKxF8dlGVOFWHorkjk" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>We wrapped the game up early after only 3-4 rounds of the 6 this mission states, because it was getting late. We talked through what might have happened if we carried on, and while he was confident I would have taken out his Dreadnoughts, and thought I had a chance to win (as VP seemed close), I think it would have come out in his favor once my remaining Line units were wiped. I was already down to almost no answers to his heavier units, and without the scoring units, he could have had it sewn up, I think.</div><div><br /></div><div>I guess this way I don't have to count it as a loss, though! 2-0-1 for the Alpha Legion, so far.</div><div><br /></div><div>Lessons learned:</div><div><br /></div><div>It's hard to go into lists with 2 Spartans and 2 dreadnoughts. I don't know if tooling up more for them is the right answer yet, though.</div><div><br /></div><div>Always take the Flashburn shells on the Kratos.</div><div><br /></div><div>Heart of the Legion is very good, make sure to use it. Evade's 5+ Shrouded roll is also very good.</div><div><br /></div><div>Graviton (from my Contemptor's palm gun) can make charging difficult since it leaves behind a blast area of difficult/dangerous terrain. Charging through difficult terrain means a -2 to the roll, and those chargers fight at Initiative 1 in the following combat.</div><div><br /></div><div>Watch out for that Space Wolves advanced reaction! <br /><br /> </div>Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-73998359253174135082022-12-11T13:20:00.001-08:002022-12-11T17:45:14.726-08:00Alpha Legion vs Word Bearers 12/10/22<div>Last night at the Ordo Fanaticus club in Portland I had my second game out with my Alpha Legion, playing The Horus Heresy.</div><div><br /></div><div>I played against a guy called Gregor, whose Word Bearers army I had played once before, with my White Scars, a few months back. At least one Contemptor seems like a given, with how good they are in this game. We were playing at 2500 points. Then, when it was his turn and he was going to try to take out the remaining Headhunters not killed by Return Fire, I used Smoke and Mirrors, the Alpha Legion advanced reaction, to redeploy them 12" away and out of sight! <br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_79a1_c7_5631_7a08" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/NDhb6c1zTQ-SWIxDL1l_damWJkryhXmsrniaIkn_xDMHlvjuQycT9IF0zLN7plXd1sg" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>My units of Veterans again proved their worth in this game by twice slaughtering opposing squads more than twice their size of Tactical marines. In both turns when one of these units arrived, I got off a double Interceptor reaction. There was minimal effect into the Gal Vorbak, just because they are so tough, but the Ashen Circle were substantially damaged. Augury Scanners giving free additional Interceptor uses might be a bit much!<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_a468_bd9a_2f27_7e4d" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/3lMkjxFCh_ZzDcUeH7R2k7N4kLSxMHkPO3x4iIkYo68fjIKl3i10wWgvKYfenuXwLnA" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>I did learn from one mistake I made this game. I had a casual list put together for a game at 50PL, which is the standard for play at my local Warhammer store. I had pre-arranged a game with Hassan, a guy I know from the store and who I have played before, only with my White Scars force. </div><div><br /></div><img alt="" id="id_eee3_5918_4798_7938" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sruVeahbmLDRj_RAeaGqk7ZV0mwkhu9Sq2Zjo6dbRtN2LGqS8KHQnxblDnXY_Ks_3eM" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><div><br /></div><div>Come to find out, the Warhammer store was closed today, so I messaged Hassan about another venue, a local game store called Rainy Day Games which only recently opened up their play annex. This was my first time playing there, and I would rate the experience very highly. Granted, it was nearly empty on a Friday night, so they were pretty accommodating, even on a non-40K night, allowing us to commandeer a couple of tables and relatively large space and a bunch of their terrain and such.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_940_1029_795e_8855" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/i7P5a0RBDeu_HDLfHaQPMNcBFhAY2o1fkg7Femu-VT_yZfgrNeJ8cTpEojA4ncRd-oM" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Chatting with Hassan, we decided to go ahead and play a larger game than I had originally planned for, at about 1500 points. For me this meant only the addition of three more models, albeit high value ones. For Hassan, it meant he could get closer to his actual tournament list. Considering how the game went, maybe we should have stuck at 50 PL!<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_514e_1cc_558a_a2ef" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/r4JENGhKABo2ipgStVmmK_RMQpvhvnVSpnLaLbiB6aN5icFOH8nOZdKZf3escyfcUzU" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>I got the first turn, and got off to what looked like a decent start, clearing an objective of his Kommandos with my Allarus Terminators.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_d278_8adc_bb45_b753" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/JqKv3I9KhafpiFAkzl0Q-Mx8w5YfX6_KZ1Faybn0ENvN78boG1btLzIaqZermg87FpA" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>However, his first turn was a hammer blow to my conical Custodes helmet, as he called the Waaagh and surged across the board with his Orky jet (Wazbom something perhaps) and Deffkoptas loaded out with Rokkits, and his Morkanaut and tons of other hard-hitting stuff.</div><div><br /></div><div>I had a couple of good moments, getting to use the Tanglefoot Grenade stratagem to try and foil a charge of his. He re-rolled it and got a 12 anyway. He charged my Witchseeker squad, which was full of flamers, and I got to do a superpowered Overwatch which knocked out a couple of the Deffkoptas.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_506c_de52_1fef_bcf7" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/X4Df2lY9qyM5Qm0fd-W-wRdQ_jnHxq5kgpcIrnrXmVvCPWBzpb-oakzwbwThWEObDGQ" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Otherwise, it was a slaughter.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_c861_7138_ea07_7733" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/OckW947SJjbz6v5WzDlRtOL9Zfrlu1-nfU4KDYeQeOLSeyQgIZiCQCs1ZWj_Mxf69gE" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>His Squighog boys annihilated a trio of Custodian Guard, and his Bikers were enough to take care of my Allarus, too. Meanwhile his plane was in my base, his Mek Guns were all still operational, and the Morkanaut had not even been brought down a bracket on it's damage table.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_34a5_c050_2b8a_d6fd" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/gEfJN_mun9Px9dKpV3ahPJ9yYF7eAoQm5lbLQ34SY4ZGgrW3HcAwk3EU6VaDaerA7qA" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>It was getting to be about the time we'd both planned to leave anyway, so we called the game early, even though it was clearly all but over before his second turn. Hassan advised I add some Vertus Praetors to my list, and as much as I am ambivalent about those models, I think he's right that they would help. My preferred additions would be some Sagittarum Guard and Pallas Grav-attacks, but they would also cost twice as much or more in dollar terms, and not being plastic GW models, wouldn't have the rules support (Stratagems, Codex inclusion) the Vertus Praetors do. I picked up a Blade Champion model while there at the shop. I like to buy something every time I play at a place to show support, and I particularly like this place since it's got a wide open, well lit space and also happens to be only about 10-15 minutes drive from my house.<br /><br /> </div>Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-53728420114121331032022-11-20T17:47:00.000-08:002022-11-20T17:47:29.904-08:00White Scars vs Tyranids 11/18/22<div>This was a very casual game that happened accidentally. I brought an Outrider detachment of:</div><div><br /></div><div>Khan on Bike</div><div>Apothecary</div><div>Scout Squad</div><div>Bike Squad</div><div>Bike Squad with Attack Bike (Heavy bolter)</div><div>Bike Squad with Attack Bike (Multi-melta)</div><div>Scout Bike Squad</div><div>Land Speeder Tornado</div><div>Devastator Squad</div><div><br /></div><div>My opponent was running Tyranids with:</div><div><br /></div><div>Hive Tryant</div><div>Tervigon</div><div>Termagants</div><div>Biovores</div><div>Scarab-like things</div><div>Zoanthropes</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><img alt="" id="id_418d_4ef1_c6c6_ee06" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/zraQgpBPYAqYdvcyMNPr9tId39QYqinwVrixsGESXGNvKME1GfpXGRzh9GJftfcAS9I" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><div><br /></div><div>Deployment was wacky because we were originally setting up for a 3-player free for all, but then one player pulled out to give someone else an opponent. We just kept rolling with what we had so far, though. </div><div><br /></div><div>The mission was randomly generated from the Open War deck, and put a single objective marker in the center of the board that could be moved each round by whoever won a roll off. The Twist was that all psychic powers had one added to their warp charge roll, and ranges extended 6", which was a nice buff to my opponent's Smite capacity, and did nothing at all for me, since I had not brought a Stormseer for this game.</div><div><br /><img alt="" id="id_e75b_f431_2c87_f014" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/ItNJnN_Ovu5ZVl3Pmj3QwBEb2KnHGyRCUwOyHWxtCC_SszpZcxPPDhLbp6DxtqkmY-8" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>The way the game played out, I used my mobility to stay on the objective the whole time with my Devastators, and I let my bikes roam wide around the table, keeping near to their max range for bolter fire. My thought was to mow down all of his small stuff and then later focus on the big monsters.</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="" id="id_29c0_4e28_633e_8de1" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/mU0aCjdOHuVBJkEvFM92FQ2UtFYZ44fFAYi9DDXe2CNQgLbzZVJ5mlvXrnYmAuM5FMI" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>This was broadly a pretty good gambit. I had the most trouble dealing with the mortal wound spam from all his psykers, but my Apothecary was able to revive a bike one time, which was nice. The Devastators were mostly wasted by having to shoot a lot of small single-wound bugs on his side, but at least they won the game by holding the objective. </div><div><br /></div><div>My opponent might have been able to make more of a play for the objective if they'd wanted to, but mostly seemed content to inch forward at me. I mostly held off the urge to charge into battle, but notably when I did give in to temptation, it cost me my Khan, who only succeeded in killing one of the three Biovores on the other side. He always seems to disappoint. 5 attacks that hit on a 2+, and he rarely lands more than 3. Anyway, he got Smite blasted off the table after his first charge.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_78f1_b0f0_3221_ca31" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/blP1yrqdcCZoDvN8QqYbc-FnaB1yD8TE5yg3NnwnIpNOmgaIqxm6GKYd6qgIlq714KM" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Apart from that mistake I think I handled the battle well enough, though. Realizing the White Scars should lean into the theme of the hunter rather than the headlong charging berserker has really helped my game with them.<br /><br /> </div>Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-74918005747656517292022-11-04T22:10:00.005-07:002022-11-04T22:10:41.128-07:00White Scars vs Deathwatch 11/04/22<img alt="" id="id_cc96_d8d6_5a9f_33d8" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/PJ_3Ubvu3ZXti5g_r_kG1zPrbaWnIAHUwPfRvljZ7pxc4fqF2ma-znCENWJ2nNSpnMg" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><div><br /></div><div>I got a pickup game at the Warhammer store nearby this evening. Open War, which means a randomly generated mission from a card deck, the details of which are in the pic above. </div><div><br /></div><div>I play White Scars, of course, whose main benefits on top of being just another Space Marine chapter are generally centered around the things they can do after having Advanced. The Twist in this game obviated all of that, since there would be no Advance moves permitted in this game. Sucks to be me! <br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_504e_2bac_cce1_9d50" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nxRnolKAUWpYTuI_jLRf_YPHmJTI0DKQ-7o5R-MuPhB7tjR5rIdjsfoMLlZfxbp-34w" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>My opponent was running 50 PL of Deathwatch to my own 50 PL. His list was something like:</div><div><br /></div><div>Primaris Captain</div><div>Something or other Kill Team</div><div>Two Invader ATVs</div><div>Assault Centurions</div><div>Gladiator Lancer</div><div>Inquisitor</div><div><br /></div><div>He combat-squaded his Kill Team such that one half had four veterans with missile launchers and one terminator with a Cyclone missile launcher, and the other half had four veterans with fancy shotguns and the sergeant with a power sword and shield of some type. I'm not overly familiar with the Deathwatch kit.</div><div><br /></div><div>My own list this time was the easiest way I could get to roughly 1000 points, or 50 PL, going with a Primaris theme, for variety. Not an optimized list by any means. No anti-tank capabilities to speak of.</div><div><br /></div><div>Primaris Captain in Gravis Armour</div><div>Primaris Lieutenant in Phobos Armour</div><div>Primaris Librarian</div><div>Intercessor Squad with Bolt Rifles</div><div>Intercessor Squad with Bolt Rifles</div><div>Intercessor Squad with Auto Bolt Rifles</div><div>Reiver Squad</div><div>Aggressor Squad</div><div>Suppressor Squad</div><div>Eliminator Squad</div><div><br /></div><div>He put his Centurions in a teleportation chamber to Deep Strike them, and I put both my Aggressors and Reivers into Outflank. Pics of deployment above and below. Most of my stuff began in the large ruins in my deployment zone near to a couple of objectives.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_93cb_585_bc42_7e69" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/Gx8-wCox_csWiswdv6UpEbJCkhRpH0dPtER_sImyE4nro9RY0B1lm2JN4bZ_sNHjmSI" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>I won the roll off for first turn, but I decided to let him have it to allow him to come to me. I felt like this made sense without the capability to Advance this game, plus it would mean he had to stick his neck out first. </div><div><br /></div><div>In a first, he actually decided to use the Orbital Bombardment stratagem on me, as my stuff was all bunched up to begin with. This would mean that I would have to move a lot of it during my turn or face mortal wounds when it got back round to his turn. This suited me, since I had three Intercessor squads I wanted to get out onto objectives anyway, and my Suppressors were more than capable of moving to find a good line of sight. Only my slower moving Captain and the stationary Eliminators would knowingly risk the mortal wounds, though it turned out one Intercessor squad was also close enough to get clipped in the end.</div><div><br /></div><div>You can see the results of my first movement phase below. The troops all moved out and onto objectives or toward the central one, and the Suppressors moved first onto the top of the crates, then after shooting made a successful charge into his remaining ATV. I believe their shooting and the Libriarian's Smite did for the first one.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_2130_dbc8_c18a_db82" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/NFv3mopOZ7TQWln1uJceU5ba4tPacBduoLrY5V3sQlEyNqJayCYg2S37abz78PkQATo" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Below is the state of the board at the end of my first turn. I had lost one Eliminator and one Intercessor at this point, but gained a VP by controlling more of the objectives for the round. 1-0.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_9f39_dd91_e28f_a89f" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/CnImH0-aph8B49qjnXtJpz0Dm30TqYy-TXF_QmjfIZogivFVKqxVVvthU12WGEYWsf8" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>When the Orbital Bombardment went off, my Captain took a fat 3 mortal wounds from it, leaving him with 4 wounds remaining.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_6a66_3ee7_10ac_9a24" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/Ur7fzK1a3xtTgEhRYlz9k8mBNk05f1_gYlzuQEQ0tD7cFwoHccL5hRa1cXuFkJtW1F4" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>During his turn, his ATV fell back from my Suppressors, toward my troops on my left side objective. He used a stratagem so that it'd be able to shoot, as well. <br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_c09d_8bdd_149c_925" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/IO9bBd6y5D1rPl0NZxmFfvQfUyV3Jd6gpGrSMRoNOUU9NLr83LuIydmIkWzU2llYmDs" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>By the time of this next pic his and my reserves had both arrived, so this had to be during his third turn. When I brought in the Aggressors over in his back corner I had them fire at the half Kill Team near them, but only one guy died. It took the rest of my second turn's shooting to kill only three of them in total.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_2eba_aa0a_8cfc_cbb" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/rTZybCGUfr-_E7grqFkoC_Q90QK6L7umZx3HNkSqDGXKYIRLcfVUfAVReimn1y8OPt4" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>His ATV had shot at my units close to it, but not done anything. In my next turn I had charged it with my remaining Suppressor, and everything else nearby, killing it with my Captain, who them consolidated over to the right back behind the crates.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_2c0c_4361_2575_2712" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/r6Esed6wYyd9w8hMISni2Z4Tk77Dw5XNzxlCr0tN3GAnVIAyuC_C5eFxW_0MwVi1VZc" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>This was the body count at that point. As of this point he had lost one full unit (the two ATVs), and I had not lost any, meaning I had a point from the second victory condition of the mission, as well as a second from the objectives, so 3-0 here.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_fa1_cfc1_d6d6_36a3" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/45H5sWTtqzY0qUMYf2rZTjtEn8qh-lX1JPt1bdEqod2aSweviy3QpVK0A54s7qOjn7U" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>This unit below with all the missiles blew my Aggressors away before they could move after their initial outflank arrival. Rough stuff!<br /><br /> <div><img alt="" id="id_f069_19b8_e6b4_cf46" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/9Nm3PF1eaaK1jCyys1pyMbo_Ba2VgGA3_isoK3dZAglsX_S2MitLI5nExYaPm7gzkqk" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Below, in my third turn, I have moved the Reivers up toward his Inquisitor, looking to charge him in order to get them on that objective. A note about his Inquisitor: he was running a proxy model, and wasn't quite sure what he wanted to do with the unit aside from Deny the Witch, so he elected to play it as nothing more than a backfield point holder and Deny source (no offensive moves). Whatever. My unit made their charge and he just picked up his Inquisitor at that point. Fair enough. He would have been facing something like 21 attacks, in Assault Doctrine.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_74e8_5f33_1740_775c" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/DPx90EL13fNNznZWn2yBHC0P9xbGxAyzw3iq5exuNSpeSvwl08zijgLeN-cvcJNezW8" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>There are a couple of Veterans in the pic above near to my models. Dealing with his was rough. I was able to Smite one away entirely with a D6 damage cast (4 mortal wounds exactly). I took another out when my Captain charged the remaining two. I should have been able to kill both, with nine power sword attacks on the charge, hitting on 2s and wounding on 3s (WL trait buffing his S stat), especially since Assault Doctrine made each attack -4 AP and 2 damage! Instead I had absolutely awful hit and wound rolls, and only two of the nine attacks made it through to damage. Four made it through to need saving, but he miraculously rolled two 6s to save. Well, two attacks at 2 damage each meant another dead Centurion. That left one, however, that was able to smash my Captain to bits after I failed three invulnerable saves at once.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_64ed_938c_9fa9_e622" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/FdZtAjX--MhOr4iARxRAd9AgMcbR_DBgKerCxMAqCLBeEcKZyybytEPsADMfpdcPSZ4" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>His missile guys opened up and killed three of my Reivers, as well. I was tracking my own VP as we went, but he wasn't, really, so I didn't know how much of a lead I had until I sat down to write the game up and figure it all out. We both kind of came with half-baked casual-ish lists (his was meant for Crusade night), and ended up having a good time. Win/win/win! <br /><br /><br /></div></div>Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-38603415994849475212022-09-29T11:16:00.038-07:002022-12-11T17:44:09.882-08:00Alpha Legion vs Iron Hands 09/29/22<div>I'm writing about this game well after the fact, but at the end of September there was originally to be a small RTT, or Rogue Trader Tournament, which in Warhammer-speak refers to a small casual tournament event, usually only over a single day.</div><div><br /></div><img alt="" id="id_f810_2163_6c80_be08" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/reXtiy9dn_gtMK988fKYMNrlwfZOSqqt2B42el7SreTQabfMsghpV3Ls-Rkx28fn0Fo" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><div><br /></div><div>Well, a few people had to drop out for one reason or another and suddenly the tournament was off. The organizer had become an acquaintance since I'd attended a previous tournament though, and was going to be at the store that day anyway, so he said he'd be glad to play a game against my new Alpha Legion force anyhow.</div><div><br /><img alt="" id="id_bb8b_5624_5c40_31ac" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/rLIm5bGGjcj9UNc0xM47u3znuzqaRj_yL0kImjboHSikO400VxOSUrxn4sXkhFt9hYY" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>If I recall, we played at 2500 points. It was held at 2,500 points for the maximum army size, with lists limited to a single Primary Detachment from the Crusade Force Organisation Chart. No Primarchs, Lords of War, or Allied Detachments of any sort were allowed. This kept the lists within the realm of approximiately balanced and simple enough to comprehend. Most of the attendees seemed to know the rules well enough, but none of us were dyed in the wool experts, so the simpler the lists and rules interactions, the better.</p><p>As it happened, in three games I never had one go into the fourth battle round (game turn, if you prefer) in the 2.5 hours set aside for them. Had the lists been set to 1500 points I think we may have finished more games. All of mine had to be settled by less than optimal haphazard points allocating, once even after my opponent had gotten two turns and I had had only one.</p><p>I brought a 2,500 point list of White Scars to the event comprising:</p><p>Praetor on Legion Spatha bike</p><p>Stormseer Consul</p><p>Champion Consul</p><p>2 Tactical squads of 10 models, one with dedicated Rhino transport</p><p>1 Scout squad of 5 models </p><p>2 Indomitus Terminator squads of 5 models</p><p>1 Indomitus Terminator squad of 10 models</p><p>1 Veteran squad with dedicated Rhino transport (Champion joined)</p><p>1 White Scars Dark Sons of Death squad of 5 models (Stormseer joined)</p><p>1 Outrider squad of 10 models (Praetor joined)</p><p>I ran this list using the Sagyar Mazan Rite of War, which gave me some respectable buffs while only placing limits on me that were all too easy to abide by, given what I had available and painted to choose from during list construction.</p><p>I played against Word Bearers, Emperor's Children, and Iron Hands. Also present were second armies of the Word Bearers and Emperor's Children, and an Imperial Fists army. There was another person who registered who probably would have had Space Wolves, but who was a no-show.</p><p>My record, as such, was 1-2 on the day, with the win against Iron Hands. Both losses, I will say, were decided by a single point of Attrition (I had lost one more unit than my opponent had when the game was called). I think this was a respectable showing for the list above.</p><p>I came to this list by a process of testing and rebuilding my prospective tournament list over a week and a half leading up to the tournament, playing out solo games against a cobbled together Opposing Force of Word Bearers from my other various collections of painted sci-fi soldiers.</p><p>Originally I had thought not to run any Rite of War, and had included a Predator, Vindicator, and Land Raider Explorator in the list. Running it with a couple of Tactical squads required me to paint up a couple of guys holding bolters (as this is a 40K army, my Tactical squads for that system include heavy and special weapons not permitted in this one). I also decided to knock out another guy with bolt pistol, chainsword, and jump pack, so that all of my Dark Sons of Death could be WYSIWYG. That unit didn't end up being used to much benefit, but I'll get to that.</p><p>Testing against my hard-as-nails Word Bearers OpFor list, which for brevity's sake I'll suffice it to say had two Contemptors and a unit of Gal Vorbak led by Argel Tal, revealed both of those to be major weakness of the army. But, I had noticed that my unit of Veterans (which I did not mix in among the Tacticals due to their black Ebon Keshig-style armor) were much better in game than I had expected, having a better WS, more wounds, and more attacks than the Tactical squads.</p><p>So, I decided to lean into them and re-tooled the list into one using the Pride of the Legion Rite of War, which then limited me to only a single Fast Attack choice and Heavy Support choice. This meant first combining my two units of 5 Outrider bikers into one unit of 10, then dropping my Attack Bikes and Land Speeder, as well as the Predator and Vindicator. I kept the Land Raider Explorator in this version.</p><p>That list still could not effectively deal with the Contemptor problem. They would get to the Land Raider before it could kill them with its Lascannons. My solution to that was to not give any opposing Dreadnoughts any juicy targets--I would remove the Land Raider which wasn't getting the job done, and instead bring in a squad of Terminators with Thunder hammers as my anti-vehicle and anti-dreadnought tool. I have 6 models with hammers and shields, so I added to them 4 with dual lightning claws, mostly as ablative wounds, and redid the list again.</p><p>By now I had finished painting the models I needed to run two 10-man Tactical Squads. This new list, above, seemed to really lend itself to the Sagyar Mazan Rite, which grants all infantry a 5+ Feel No Pain, and Fearless on the turn they charge. Couple that with the Heroes Never Die warlord trait that is exclusive to the White Scars, and you may have an entire army that is flat out Fearless (and thus auto-passes all Morale and Pinning tests) for most of the game, should the warlord be killed early and in line of sight of the rest of your models on the table. This exact thing happened to me up against the Emperor's Children. Which brings me to my next topic--the utility of certain units.</p><p>Even in a big 10-model block (11 with the Praetor), Outriders just melt under any amount of pressure. Coming to this game from 40K, I'm used to my bikers being tougher than infantry, with triple the amount of wounds, to boot. No, these guys have the same 4 Toughness as anyone else, and only a single wound. They also shoot half the shots, but that's another subject. This is how my Warlord died in the first round one game, granting the entire army Fearless for the rest of that game. I have learned that they can put out a decent amount of bolter fire, but that they shouldn't really commit to combat with anything more numerous than them and definitely not anything with a higher weapon skill, like say a unit of Veterans. When and if I get around to painting a unit of actual Heresy-era units for White Scars, I don't know if I'll use these guys much, when there will be jetbikes to choose over them.</p><p>I was also kind of let down by the Stormseer and the Dark Sons of Death I had accompanying him, though that's probably mostly due to the former's Psychic Weapon. See, it's both Heavy and Barrage, which effectively means he has to stand still in order to fire it. I kept trying to get it to do any good, and so kept leaving the whole unit just sat where they deployed all game. The idea is that the Stormseer is calling down lightning to zap entire areas of the battlefield. It's a 5" large blast, so it scatters, of course. That I can live with. It starts out as S4, though, which is really not great. You can buff it to S8, which is a lot better, but even if you do so, it's still AP 4, which I have to say, sucks. It's also got the Force and Shock Pulse special rules, which can be pretty good against Corrupted (Gal Vorbak et al) and Dreadnoughts, but good luck getting your single hit on a Dreadnought through it's 2+ armor save! The possibility to Instant Death daemonic units aside, I can only imagine the power would be at all dependable against massed Imperial Army-level mortal opposition. Against single-wound marines it could maybe get a couple of kills, but you couldn't rely on it. Anyway, you could fairly say my Stormseer and Dark Sons were both wasted on trying to get any utility out of this power that I had give me Perils I think three times over three games. At least the Dark Sons saw use as ablative wounds for that, I suppose.</p><p>Now for the bright spots. The Legion Champion consul is awesome. You can use him to call out and kill pretty much any character on the other side, including enemy Praetors. Veterans are really good, as I mentioned above. Terminators, also good. Thunder Hammers are your only hope as far as melee weapons for infantry trying to take down a Dreadnought. Aside from Melta bombs, maybe. The humble Tactical Squad, very very good! Fury of the Legion combined with the Return Fire or Overwatch reactions. Very enjoyable. The scouts were able to Concuss enemy units (with Astartes Shotguns), and thus make them fight at -1 WS during the next Assault phase. This is immensely good, if you can pull it off.</p><p>The event was a ton of fun. All the guys I met were just happy to be there playing this cool new game. </p><p>Going forward, I'm hoping to hobby up my Alpha Legion to the point where I can take them as my main Horus Heresy force. I'll keep the Scars on the back burner as far as 30K goes. I've got more Word Bearers already painted for this system than anything, but already seeing two guys playing them at an 8-person event? I'll focus on my Alpha Legion, which I've been wanting to do for a long while, awaiting the release of this game. I have Headhunters on the painting desk right this moment, and Tactical Squads and Contemptors and Terminators and tanks galore to do later, too.</p><p><img id="id_5caf_e1d_f0fb_e607" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/uwlBQ1eD3GJbfpJ6wmFqOdfLKNlfROgKStY_27y0v6KZX6ysC3OrtWjD0g-sJZU_5Xo" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_3b3_9c67_ca0d_3b41" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/2XgnM9P4bRHp-zZd0QJu6UdFrZmToT_eUgQoRwLqFwfArW8XVB1Hq67Xvd-0e90_BHo" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_bd62_e974_fd0_3148" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/a5gI6TlN2kRAh7tg9xXcR9SXFzYFa9JC6BFAheOcVdcLJVjayC_AaOAKLddcoaDEgp0" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_cc8a_b54d_e629_c25d" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/PxF7wG-qpF1SsnCJW1G4_CSXOe0VCNA527q_1D67ytuREbdWMhrVFsB32cXRtQUnKvE" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_4f93_aeb6_4507_f992" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/p36IMngcD5mtP3NYoOgX6u_NpUWiNJU84uXbaPwMLod8sf0MjZuiIO09HuZfXGFr934" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_1c38_c6e2_ee5f_c936" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/MO56spMnn-P31NOlPbW76vpkKSkPVyRsxvfSEoJ21WudwkZMZ0QuAi9VWUzgUIGdyzo" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_e14b_ceac_fec7_75b3" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/FiEe2ChHna3MbIJ4VXgG7m_7voKld-7Q4igGGNPXvi1V92lmnrHKC_DJhIMw0P2NsFg" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_81f0_57f_5847_3c5c" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/WbjiEdNOKEzqkrf1y9YbuZyK8jPBYF35zPf7OGGSREirT91h4ILZz7772IbbcEdXTds" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_6065_abcd_9265_8613" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gdF74QacMaO2P_JGoNUAsinFj_i64tBnZRwd6HeoCaCuImueHk4CeDj3vg8mPD9EyUI" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_e930_2bfc_cc_542e" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/4t7WhBTVx44MT90hJlz4t38shnrdN6tLKwSnqq2kear_2zQyaHl3snW0sVBM5YtYYXM" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_9a3b_480b_a8ad_90f0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/lmXi3SxsTuG_oN0FDeScEQGceGmlo5MkahpMdsw4orOeXVWUuewkssMuqMwyEFGULx0" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_666_44e2_1d3c_9ac9" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/7V7Ig3geFPsl6_ULAki-DsdTd-C8FoFM8XH9aCCvME-pK3yPIlZi-CBswYC7nI6og44" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_1b2d_de27_59ef_725d" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/fL7jn8DWQOzjjhwmxvCKOaesjCBw8XR1FqyTG8aMm4BPI7uyyZKaId08thGjGv0HtoY" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_4d99_d90d_d38a_bfd4" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/JLo6Pq8wGSfyEmPZF6ZJE3O4gmp1LsgBizLlKM-aa8i7aOhyVIm3Nhxc9T2tI8RbJmA" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_19a1_335d_be25_517c" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ao0HJ_ZG7EBlMT7GgBteOljwmKWNibVJUFRDOaHTskMpLJDGRbQoa8smcW8Ew_5TicE" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_7977_f943_91ff_ca13" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/sE3YHqcp_mIklcMbEaGaNyxmbejKuAqXPUj17pC6npUfnJpPpWzyrq1nGyN14dsb9Qw" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_37cb_26f0_8be8_ddf8" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/nmvfVeic7HQlIggaSljssHgqCMNGz_G4Ywn_hIAU_erjZ-i3v6VToKsucKxk3K72d9M" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_e608_f0b9_2ba8_8de8" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/IN01W8AL8cTleupCeOiS2mU63vbHGJkB-bP15x_TxH3D8ORElHKlR4OpD2wPWKWVTY0" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><img id="id_7ac3_ffe3_2131_3b61" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/nDVoQTycObdOmW_1KjJCduF_W9AXPAyUHOngSCfOVlYMztXzoKLy12EVgdSuyfTOlbA" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px; height: auto;"><br><br><br></p>Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-6133323444151325092022-06-11T21:42:00.004-07:002022-06-11T21:42:33.444-07:00White Scars vs Tyranids 06/10/22<div>This was a game played in a rush, and with a list specifically selected to minimize unit count, because we only had about an hour and a quarter to closing time at the store when we began. </div><div><br /></div><div>I played against a local player whom I have played before, who previously ran Necrons. He's switched over to Tyranids of Hive Fleet Leviathan for the second Phase of the Octarius campaign that we're playing out, among our group of about 10 that have been frequenting the Warhammer store lately.</div><div><br /></div><div>My list:</div><div><br /></div><div>Librarian in Terminator Armour</div><div>Terminator Squad</div><div>Terminator Squad</div><div>Terminator Assault Squad</div><div>Land Raider</div><div><br /></div><div>The Tyranids:</div><div><br /></div><div>Winged Hive Tryant</div><div>Screamer-killer</div><div>Exocrine (I think)</div><div>Neurothrope</div><div>Zoanthropes</div><div>Tyranid Warriors (I think)</div><div><br /></div><div>This was my first time ever playing against Tyranids, and I don't know that army very well at all, so I'm a little unsure of what some of his models were. And, we were hurrying through the game, at times forgetting rules or even whole phases (lucky for me). Neither of us even bothered to select Agendas for the game, as far as I know. I only made use of Marked for Greatness this game, for my part. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>We played the Recon Patrol mission from the Crusade set, which stipulates that half or more of your army has to start the game in Strategic Reserves, but might join the battle in the first round if you roll a 4+. I only had one model to deploy before the game, my Land Raider, which had my Terminator Assault Squad embarked within.</div><div><br /></div><div>He deployed his Winged Hive Tyrant and his Tyranid Warriors, then won the roll-off to get the first turn, as well.</div><div><br /></div><img alt="" id="id_ac4d_2eab_87e5_9b0c" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/N5mNHHDw-pzO-s1_FByMkYgIMwF2jElYwuUM9Ky5U0hUERhzI5COPvOrojz6_AyUswI" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><div><br /></div><div>Our units in Strategic Reserves at the beginning of the game:<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_6bb5_1fa8_2194_15e8" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/fCQbwHD6_hjQeHk4OazBMcyBDwMm_ma1VORu7Bp6j9dGfE6DsLcXhbFYsRysDe2xa3U" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>In his first turn, his Hive Tyrant flew up the board to grab objective 2, and also to shoot at my Land Raider. He knocked 8 wounds off it, but it survived, since he forgot to do his psychic phase this round. The only reason I stood any chance at all, in all likelihood.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_6e27_9de5_8598_d796" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/nMXpkQFJ_71abH2-QmXnrF_oyBQ3aVw9ibqN1So6SMdV_uQPzDY12IlzF_GbPldL9t4" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>In my turn, my Terminators in the Land Raider hopped out and charged the Hive Tyrant. Another squad came in from reserves and also made their charge distance. The final squad of Terminators came in further up the board, and got off some pot shots at the Warriors, but didn't kill anything.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_798b_e400_4415_5429" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/4WTBQ_vAiqN6C2mLX36ULTAbIwtX1iDC4AV7yz5h14nA2Rh3pEO7KSkrjztRLTQE9ck" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>My combined Terminator assault was able to bring down the Hive Tyrant, and the Assaulters with the Lightning claws consolidated toward the Exocrine.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_85a3_d8c_234e_bba3" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fDTglI7FthyD_QGKn4Yvtl7HRPRYd2hMF2aKS6hSrzC7nWI3c91XA8uIky0S7xCz-8Y" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>He used the Exocrine to shoot at my squad I'd left on objective 2 in his second turn, so in my second turn I was able to Smite and Lightning Call it, as well as shoot it and assault it to death.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_1c5f_7103_71f9_79f0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/Mv2Q5NntDNtiaO3jfvQOGiuTL6GZemOm149MKJDyHiMgdD9uoYrKg97mpJk01XuRr04" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>After which the board looked like this. Luckily all of my units passed their out-of-action tests this time around.</div><div><br /></div><div>My Crusade force is very heavily oriented around elite infantry units. I'm running a lot of Terminators, which is kind of the theme, as well as Centurions. I think combating a list like this might require more bodies to absorb the mortal wound bombs dealt out each psychic phase, at least in a screening capacity so that my elite infantry's heavy armor isn't obviated by the psychic attacks that ignore it altogether.</div><div><br /></div><div>I should probably play the mission more as well, but I just wanted to scrap, and actually had some fun doing so, so in the end, a good game is a good game.<br /><br /> </div>Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-26332898217363602882022-05-28T14:01:00.001-07:002022-05-28T14:01:06.370-07:00White Scars vs Chaos Knights 05/25/2022<div>I was lucky enough to get in a couple of Crusade league games the other day, against the new Chaos Knights codex. I won't do a thorough move by move account of these games this time, but the pics below tell the story well enough. It was more or less a slaughter both times. The War Dog Karnivores in particular were absolutely brutal, capable of wiping a whole squad of either Terminators or Centurions in a single round of combat. It didn't help that I failed a ton of 5+ save rolls, either.</div><div><br /></div><div>In our first game, I won the roll off to go first, and I really made the most of it, getting both of my Terminator Squads into combat and doing some serious damage with them. Unfortunately the big Knight on his side, the Abominant, had a way of reducing my damage incoming to it by 1 per attack, which meant that it lived longer than it otherwise should have, in either game. </div><div><br /></div><div>There's really not much more to say here, other than that Tejek Khan did get his second Titanic kill of the crusade, but that was just about the sole bright spot in either game for my force. My opponent is a good guy, though, and so both games were enjoyable. </div><div><br /></div><div>Unfortunately I wasn't able to really do anything with the Centurions in either game. I believe they died to attacks on the charge both times out, and the game where I went first they didn't even make it in range to shoot their meltaguns before being charged. The Vindicator did well enough in the one game where it was able to take some shots, at least.</div><div><br /></div><div>On the bright side, we both came away with two Requisition Points, which is always good. We've both got orders of battle hungry for more supply.</div><div><br /></div><img alt="" id="id_6ac8_b5aa_4999_40f0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/c395WulyV0muJIwP4qsPLRh183pgj3DmSlIlNqrf7ZRXfGuUxYHlvPhehk7b9Z2Icx0" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_52b1_1c5c_cfe8_37a5" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gPwS293bNANpba5LOEtFAIw2SLvk-xp-7WeYUSoDLk9ktZTKSwnFwzqd1wU0grJCsrI" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_2dd6_53f7_e9a2_e568" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/scQ5y7dlCYj5Kazlkavf6vsemsT_GeMGulFlfzFQtob9PpzFSRBVtw9mSneFt-X8cNA" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_1fdf_83fa_d228_2874" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_8d4dsSHgiZBHyznxDreZnPWM6LltumgqO6JDXSDZWfXqmBMmrTPoznUTQqm92omKS0" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_303b_f14a_47d7_b5c5" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/LIhU1j2rZ8mJgtJd26Xe_BYTHCgByhfGHwq1lADaCvWD9i9lJq7c_6zjZQ_yx2iVeng" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_a1b3_94d0_3a98_7a28" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/7lD_1AJuwy2PtGlYFf17sqDtIdrlxdecjI3Bn6xsmsxnXjgRPHLVzLHFHqKubJENVaw" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_6f4f_6e0f_62f6_b99c" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/PZd36wqG5QzCx-mB_goaGlbYYmci-SQ6SyoShbov_IPcXQzUNFzj47k8trgSF0Qq8Z8" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_18bc_ed97_6b1c_798c" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/Qekro0JneNMCsb97DJBzKLdfKS41bbh37beyOrYX2hBAss18vpyLfFdT5l7a-yboeDU" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_9126_f12_b121_ddf4" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/kCUGMo6Vqp3Mb0eQjxppZmaMgO1Egq1rSDMhwoulXge1NIkKQ2snjKDUl_TRZIdqJP8" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /> Count Elmdorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07774075985647158998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1184181952626005640.post-11729748322624751722022-05-15T22:51:00.003-07:002022-05-15T22:51:44.316-07:00White Scars vs Orks 05/13/22<div>This was a game for the local Crusade campaign, against a mixed list of Orks, Goffs and Snakebites. We used the Open War card deck to generate a mission at the Incursion (50PL a side) size.</div><div><br /></div><div>Below you can see the deployment. The red D6 in the center of the board represents a relic we were after. Any model that moved into contact with it could pick it up and then carry it until they were destroyed and dropped it. This was a two on two game, where my White Scars were paired off with the campaign master's (Sam) Thousand Sons against the same Necrons I played last time paired with some Chaos Knights.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Thousand Sons:</div><div><br /></div><img alt="" id="id_11bd_974e_4189_a5d" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/xWg2uVkjPRG89b3QrM2TM-K8x-TIMzOjjqIww5HXctl2G6n62Hh_wX2clO2vLAxfKPk" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><div><br /></div><div>The Chaos Knights:<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_23b3_4e89_5ba9_4c75" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5XqYqcTKh_wuDboPA_nc05JaXxuGF8xyQfgheKGccPPWeh_x47boXbfKAreyKI5zhJM" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>The mission is an interesting one where it's Dawn of War deployment (on the long edges), and five objective markers are put in a line down the middle of no man's land, representing the front lines of a battle. In your command phase, you can move the objectives you control 6" toward your opponent's deployment zone, as though pushing the battle line back. You get VP each round based on how many objectives are pushed in this way.</div><div><br /></div><div>We were defending, so we went first in deployment. We were also both using the entire side of the board, so our forces were intermingled. The field was pretty limited in terms of terrain, so to try to avoid deploying in the kill zone of the big Knight Tyrant, I put my Centurions over to the other side of the board, obscured from that one model. My Terminators were in striking distance of an objective, and the War Dogs, as well. I had a combat squad of Tactical Marines in some ruins where their heavy bolter could pick targets of opportunity, and my other combat squads and bike squad were poised to head toward other objectives and hopefully harry some necron warriors. My Stormseer Librarian was with the Centurions, and my Captain was with the Terminators to help them hit with those power fists.</div><div><br /></div><div>Left side deployment:<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_eaf2_2c56_5476_f17d" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/tz4DzDwlWk2UjyJ65dQk7pepSUXKjsfNWDWzRy6NYq8SeLpegcNO-0vC8mHpGsDmbbA" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Right side deployment:<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_b0e_8ac6_c9a3_8e69" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/zGbyP8igJWuQlkttE5utZDLdz_0Z8whS8lZqvnw5Lro8FnJmP0KAy3al25APQgMCn6k" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Sam deployed a bunch of Tzaangors, a Defiler, some Rubricae, and some Scarab Occult Terminators, along with an Infernal Master and an Exalted Sorcerer on Disc of Tzeench.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_109f_3578_252c_7196" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/7V1QDk00SSBZ6Jl1Gm3pGzAo8PEzR3pvbl3FPkq8dB632LceWnvC2E0QL8kFMhwPeok=s16000" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>The enemy lines:<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_37e9_2289_1d72_62f8" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/ufOgB_9zK1vMgHCSsxRZ3giCuBHyTPQNO6Q4d4JrwofWMh4hy61agFwA6P8v9azviyI" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /><br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_1c80_a48_e5b5_60c7" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_XcpD-JRaFjNw-t6NKzKqaKH_k5ErDCSSw2L-rBDxcrFpegWzFmgNqEP1ogEn9m8xIs" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>We won the roll-off for first turn, and decided to take it. In the first turn, I moved everything up but the one combat squad in cover. Most units advanced, so there wasn't much shooting, and no charging done this turn. I cast Ride the Winds on my Centurions to help them with mobility for the next round, and I did Smite three wounds off a base of scarabs on the necron side, and also kill another with a single Centurion's meltaguns (the other two were out of range). There was a lot more psychic from the Thousand Sons, of course, and some shooting, as well. I couldn't tell you exactly what of either, because we were taking our combined turn at the same time, and sort of loosely calling out shots and agreeing on what to focus down where it really mattered.<br /><br /><img alt="" id="id_5b49_f2d0_50b5_8e45" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/qvRZGrqdJlW-hhuvScPGXm5pA7gnC7lXyx53WzPVkbWthLLKNjsD3Qq4syPgFXfbXIc" style="height: auto; width: 392px;" title="" tooltip="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>The Thousand Sons had the brunt of their force over on the left side, out in front of my Terminators and Centurions.
